Joining the unfit list
India’s woes spilled over as Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir joined Zaheer Khan on the list of injured. While Tendulkar is down with viral infection, Gambhir was forced to leave the field after taking a blow on the left elbow. This means Tendulkar would be able to bat only at No. 7.
The rule states that the batsman has to wait for the amount of time he has been off the field before he gets to bat or until after the fifth wicket has fallen, whichever is earlier.
Fielding at short-leg, Gambhir was struck by Matt Prior’s full-blooded pull shot off Harbhajan Singh, five overs before tea.
He was immediately rushed to a local hospital for an X-ray and was not fit to open the innings.
Tendulkar remained in the team hotel for a better part of Sunday and briefly took the field after the tea break.
