Ajit Agarkar

Age 48IndiaINDIA
Right-arm fast Bowler

Few cricketers in Indian history embodied game-changing volatility quite like Ajit Agarkar, a slinky, lightning-fast bowler whose deceptive whippy action packed surprising pace. Born on December 4, 1977, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, he announced his presence to the international cricket world with immediate impact. Making his One-Day International debut against Australia at Kochi in April 1998, followed by his Test debut against Zimbabwe at Harare in October 1998, Agarkar's early career was a whirlwind of wickets. He stunned opposition lineups by becoming the fastest bowler in world cricket to reach 50 ODI wickets at the time, needing just 23 matches to achieve the historic milestone.

Agarkar's career was defined by sensational, match-defining peaks with both ball and bat. His signature bowling masterpiece arrived during the second Test against Australia at Adelaide in December 2003, where his razor-sharp second-innings spell of 6 for 41 blew open the match and scripted India's historic Test win on Australian soil. Equally capable of explosive heroics with the bat, he struck a magnificent, unbeaten 109 against England at Lord's in July 2002, etching his name onto the ground's famous honours board. To underscore his raw striking power, he also smashed a blisteringly fast 21-ball half-century against Zimbabwe at Rajkot in December 2000, setting a benchmark for lower-order hitting in Indian white-ball history.

Over a distinguished white-ball career spanning 191 One-Day Internationals, Agarkar picked up 288 wickets at an average of 27.85, positioning him among India's top ODI wicket-takers alongside legends Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. In red-ball cricket, he claimed 58 Test wickets across 26 matches while adding valuable runs down the order. Agarkar's knack for striking at crucial moments made him a mainstay in major global tournaments, contributing to India's shared victory at the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and their iconic triumph at the inaugural 2007 ICC T20 World Cup. In domestic cricket, he remained a Mumbai stalwart, capping his playing career by captaining his home state to the Ranji Trophy title in the 2012–13 season.

Following his retirement from all formats in 2013, Agarkar transitioned into expert broadcasting before stepping into senior administrative roles. His deep tactical insight and extensive experience led to his appointment as the Chairman of the BCCI Senior Men's Selection Committee in July 2023.
