Dwayne Bravo

Age 42West IndiesWEST INDIES
Right Handed All Rounder

Long before "Champion" echoed around cricket grounds and became synonymous with his name, Dwayne Bravo was just another young all-rounder trying to find his place in international cricket. He arrived with a lively personality, nagging medium pace and enough batting ability to make himself useful. What followed, though, was a transformation few could have predicted, as Bravo went on to become one of the defining figures of the T20 era.

Bravo made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago in 2001-02, and two years later earned a Test call-up for West Indies, debuting against England in 2004. He impressed early with bat and ball, soon scoring a maiden Test century against South Africa, in an innings overshadowed by a heated on-field incident with captain Graeme Smith over an alleged racial remark. Early on, Bravo looked the better bowler of the two disciplines, but his batting caught up quickly, and by 2005 he was good enough to score a century against Australia under pressure and back it up with a six-wicket haul in the same series. Injury and a poor 2007 World Cup then slowed his progress for a couple of years.

In 2010, Bravo turned down a central contract from the West Indies board, choosing instead to build a career across the growing world of T20 leagues. It cost him his place in the Test side, though he remained a fixture in the T20I team. He was signed by Mumbai in the inaugural edition of the Indian T20 league and performed well before moving to Chennai in 2011. Ahead of the 2013 Champions Trophy, he was named West Indies' ODI captain in place of Darren Sammy. He was the players' spokesperson during West Indies' refusal to complete a tour of India in 2014 amid a pay dispute with the board, a standoff that strained his standing with selectors.

Injuries followed, and he was left out of the ODI side once Jason Holder was appointed captain. Bravo announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2015, continuing to represent West Indies in ODIs and T20Is and was part of the side that won the 2016 World T20. As injuries and form limited his opportunities further, he leaned increasingly into franchise cricket before announcing his retirement from international cricket altogether in 2018. He reversed that decision in 2019, going on to represent West Indies at the 2021 T20 World Cup, after which he retired from international cricket for good.

A middle-order batter with stylish cover drives and quick footwork, Bravo brought a distinctly Caribbean flair to everything he did, backed up by athletic, acrobatic fielding that energised sides around him. As a bowler, his clever variations and one of the best slower balls in the game made him one of T20's most reliable death-overs specialists. With Chennai Super Kings, he won the IPL title three times as a player, in 2011, 2018 and 2021, becoming one of the franchise's most recognisable figures along the way. In the Caribbean Premier League, he became the competition's most decorated player, winning five titles as a player, four with Trinbago Knight Riders and a fifth with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as captain.

By the end, his white-ball numbers were staggering as he was the first bowler in T20 history to reach the 300, 400, 500 and 600-wicket milestones, finishing with 631 wickets from 582 matches. Bravo moved into coaching almost as soon as he stepped back from playing. He took over as Chennai Super Kings' bowling coach, and the switch paid off straight away, with CSK winning the title again in 2023, his fourth with the franchise overall. From there, he branched out further, working as a consultant with Afghanistan's T20 side during their run to a maiden World Cup semi-final in 2024.

The following year marked a new chapter. Bravo joined Kolkata Knight Riders as mentor, and at the same time took over as head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders, the franchise where his legend had first been built. Under him, TKR won a sixth CPL title, this time from the dugout rather than the middle. In 2026, Bravo became the first-ever inductee into the CPL Hall of Fame. TKR also retired his No. 47 jersey, the first such tribute in the tournament's history.
