The Indian cricket board decided to send a full strength squad for the one-off Twenty20 international against South Africa at Johannesburg on March 30, turning a deaf ear to calls by the IPL franchisees and ignoring the fatigue of the players. But the hosts have decided to rest key players who are involved in the ongoing test series in New Zealand by fielding almost a second-string side.
South Africa announced a 13-member squad on Saturday, which included three debutants.
"We are leaving all the players out who are involved in the current Test match against New Zealand with the exception of Jacques Kallis, for whom there are special circumstances," said Andrew Hudson, Cricket South Africa's (CSA) convener of selectors.
"They will arrive back home two days before the match, having travelled halfway across the world, including a 10-hour time difference, and we don't believe they will be in any condition to play an international game of cricket," he added.
Regular limited-overs skipper AB de Villiers, who played in three-match T20 series against New Zealand last month, and Hashim Amla, who had featured in the past five T20 outings, have been rested.
Two other key members of the South African squad, Morne Morkel and JP Duminy also do not feature in the squad. Lonwabo Tsotsobe was the only other member of the Test squad in New Zealand, apart from Kallis, to be picked.
India squad: MS Dhoni (C), Virat Kohli (Vice-Captain), Robin Uthappa, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda.
South Africa squad: Johan Botha (C), Farhaan Behardien, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Rusty Theron, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Morne van Wyk, Dane Vilas.
