Women's WC: Kerr, Sattherthwaite shine as New Zealand register dominant 62-run win over India

Team India faced a 62-run loss to New Zealand in their second game of the ICC Women's World Cup on Thursday. It was a convincing victory for the ‘White Ferns’, who put India on the backfoot through the entire game and registered their first win of the tournament. New Zealand had faced a stunning three-run defeat to West Indies in the opening game of the World Cup. India, meanwhile, had defeated Pakistan by 107 runs in their first game.
Winning the toss, Indian skipper Mithali Raj invited the hosts to bat who put up a strong total of 260/9 in 50 overs. Amy Satterthwaite was the pick of the batters as she scored an impressive 75, while Amelia Kerr also scored a 64-ball 50 as the two forged a 77-run stand for the third wicket after Suzie Bates (5) and captain Sophie Devine (35) were dismissed cheaply.
Katey Martin (41) also played an impressive knock to steer New Zealand ahead following the dismissal of Satterthwaite to steer the hosts to a strong score. For India, Pooja Vastrakar bowled a phenomenal spell as she ended with figures of 4/34, while Jhulan Goswami picked the record-equalling wicket of Martin. Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/46) and Deepti Sharma (1/52) were also among the wickets.
India, however, never looked confident in the run-chase as the side lost the wickets of Smriti Mandhana (6) and Deepti Sharma (5) early in the innings. Yastika Bhatia, who replaced Shafali Verma at the top of the order, was also dismissed for 28 while Mithali Raj fell victim to Amelia Kerr on 31.
Harmanpreet Kaur (71 off 63 deliveries) led the lone fight for India as she continued to lose partners at the other end. Kerr, who finished with figures of 3/56, eventually dismissed the Indian batter as the side was bowled out on 198 in 46.4 overs.
