In a surprising decision, opening batsman Alex Hales has decided to take an indefinite break from cricket citing personal reasons days after being named in England’s provisional 15-member squad for the ICC ODI World Cup.

Hales, selected as a back-up opener in England’s provisional squad, informed his club Nottinghamshire about his indefinite break on Friday. He also pulled out of Nottinghamshire’s match against Lancashire.

“Alex Hales has made himself unavailable for selection for personal reasons and no timetable has been set for his return to action,” Nottinghamshire said in a statement.
