Aadhaar centres will be set up at select post offices in Uttarakhand to offer a convenient option to locals for enrolling for or updating their Aadhaar details.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the government of India, which is based on one’s biometric and demographic data.
With the government linking almost all the schemes with the unique identification number, the setting up of these centres will make it easier for people, especially in the remote, hill areas of Uttarakhand, to get their Aadhaar cards made or updated, officials said.
Udai Krishna, chief postmaster general (CPMG) of the Uttarakhand Postal Circle, said Aadhaar updation and registration centers are being set up at all the 13 general post offices (GPOs, one in each district of the state).
The first such center in Uttarakhand was inaugurated at the Dehradun GPO on July 15 by Rajya Sabha member RK Sinha, who also used the facility to get his own Aadhaar details updated at the centre.
On the other hand, centres will be set up at total 318 sub post offices in a “phased manner” where the facility of updating one’s Aadhaar details (making a change or correction in particulars like mobile number or address) will be made available.
“A lot of complaints were being received about the functioning and quality of work by private operators (providing Aadhaar services) from around the country, which is why this decision was taken to set up Aadhaar centres at post offices,” CPMG Krishna told Hindustan Times, adding that the staff in Uttarakhand had undergone adequate training for running the centres.

“Aadhaar centers at GPOs are in the ready mode while those at sub-post offices are being readied. We are waiting for supply of thumb impression machines from Delhi, after which the centres will begin functioning,” he said.
