DEHRADUN: Chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Union minister Satyapal Singh on Tuesday laid the foundation stones for the projects worth Rs 918.94 crore pertaining to the ‘Namami Gange’, the centrally sponsored ‘Clean Ganga Project’, at a function in Haridwar.
Rawat said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been making “Herculean efforts” to keep the Ganga clean and in maintaining its uninterrupted flow. “The people will have to pitch in and ensure that purity of 26,000 springs that originate from the (Uttarakhand) Himalaya (and feed the river) remained intact.”
He said the Ganga is getting polluted more owing to the garbage, chemicals used in farmlands and clothes flowing into the river. “All sections of the people will have to pitch in to ensure that the flow of the river throughout its 2,500 km course remains clean and uninterrupted,” Rawat said, adding the whole task requires contemplation and an attitudinal change.
In that connection, a number of suggestions had been put forth by the people in workshops and symposia organised under the ‘Namami Gange’ project. “One of these important suggestions pertains to the need for putting the mortal remains of the dead in pits and planting saplings instead of immersing them in the Ganga,” he said, adding the saplings planted by the people would evoke the memory of their forefathers.
Union minister Satyapal Singh said there would be no dearth of central funds for the cleaning of the Ganga. “The people living along the Ganga from Gangotri to the Ganga Sagar will have to take a pledge to bring the river back to its pristine form,” he said.
