Victims of last year’s Uttarakhand tragedy, who were rendered homeless, have been asked by the district administration to produce documents of existing property so that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh can be remitted to them in installments to construct new houses.
The victims mainly from the Narayanbagar, Thrali and Deval blocks of Chamoli district in Garhwal do not have a second piece of land in their names. With the initial relief of Rs 2 lakh, and some loans, they managed to purchase land.
When land requirement increased, prices shot up in the area.
As a result, land worth a circle rate of 35 thousand per Nali (200 sq m) was sold for `1.5 lakh to `2 lakh going upto Rs 3 to 4 lakh, depending upon the locality of the land. Sundri Devi of Nasir Bazar in Thrali block who is presently living in a tin shed with a family of four had to pay Rs 2.5 lakh for a tiny piece of land at Thrali.

Agricultural fields of the villagers that sustained them throughout the year were also washed away by the swollen Pindar. People are not ready to accept `2,500 per Nali (200 sq m) as compensation for their fields.
