According to regional metrological centre, the epicenter of the quake was in Uttarkashi near the border of Himachal Pradesh and tremors were felt far away in the Mori region and also in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

Uttarkashi district magistrate Ashish Srivastav said there was no report of any loss of lives or damage from the region.

He further said that the district administration is geared up to face any eventualities. “We work in the hills which are at the risk of natural calamities round the year and we are prepared to handle the situation in case of a major earthquake or natural disaster.”

This was the third earthquake recorded in the state by the Met office since December. On December 6, a tremor of magnitude 4.7 with its epicenter in Chamoli district, was felt across the state.

Monday’s tremor was low in intensity but the experts say it should be taken as a warning signal.

It is high time for the state to retrofit the old buildings and erect quake resistance structures, said Dehradun-based geologist Sushil Kumar Rohella.
