After trying and failing in many efforts to make the traffic situation normal on Dehradun roads, the traffic directorate of Uttarakhand has come up with an idea to shake up the people’s conscience to improve the traffic situation.
The directorate has decided to install boards on intersections with eye-catching messages, which will include couplets. “The couplets will prompt the public to look at them and may provoke their thoughts for the better,” said Kewal Khurana, the assistant inspector general of traffic police.
Khurana has himself penned the couplets on traffic problems such as not wearing helmet and seat belt. “My couplets are already part of the social media, though it is not self promotion,” he said. He does poetry with pen name ‘Kewal’.
The traffic situation is deteriorating in Uttarakhand by the day and the narrow roads, encroachment and non-compliance of traffic rules by the public are said to be the main factors behind the problem. The problem is worse in Dehradun, which has 8.5 lakh vehicles out of the total 23 registered vehicles in the entire state.
The traffic problems were so compounded in the city during the past month that deputy inspector general of police, Garhwal range, Pushpak Jyoti had to himself visit many intersections to take stock of the situation. Following his visits, openings of many dividers were closed for smooth traffic flow. The traffic department also reached out to the school students and formed junior traffic force to help in traffic management. The students were told to apprise their parents and neighbours about the traffic rules. The students also made the violators aware about the traffic rules after they were fined by the police.
