On the day of the festival of lights — Diwali — one prefers to celebrate with family and friends. But, for the officials of Delhi Police, who safeguard the city, the entire city is their family. “Our work doubles during the festive season, but that’s not anything new for us. We have to be extra careful and attentive to avoid any mishap in the city. We patrol through the day and night and the best part of serving the citizens on Diwali is the visit of our senior officers. They appreciate our efforts and also share sweets with us,” says Deepak Sharma, a constable.

Like Sharma, there are hundreds of police personnel who patrol on the night of Diwali. But, what keeps these officers going is a generous act? Every Diwali, the senior officials take to the streets of Delhi to be with their colleagues. These sweets add sweetness to the thoughts of their loved ones, providing them the succour essential for rendering duty for long hours. Manish Kumar, another constable of PCR vans, says, “My kids are young, and they feel sad that I don’t celebrate Diwali with them. But, I make them understand that I’ve my responsibility towards the city. Hum aapas mein to kabhi bhi celebrate kar sakte hain.”

Monika Bhardwaj, DCP, PCR, says, “It’s our duty to meet our team on the day of Diwali — once during the day and once during the night — and we do it willingly. My family knows that I’m going out to make my colleagues feel special on the festive occasion, and ensure that the citizens feel secure.”
