A day after his iconic blue Maruti WagonR was stolen from outside the Delhi Secretariat, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal saying that law and order situation in the National Capital is rapidly “deteriorating.”

In his letter to Baijal, Kejriwal asked what the people of Delhi should expect when the chief minister’s car gets stolen from outside his office.

“My car getting stolen is a small matter. But the fact that it went missing outside the Delhi Secretariat reflects the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi,” Kejriwal wrote.

He went on to take a jibe at the Delhi Police saying that upon receiving his letter, the police will try to paint a rosy picture of law and order in the city “by sharing favourable statistics.”

“What can the common men expect in a state where the chief minister’s car goes missing? Police and law and order come directly under you. Please make the system robust. We are ready to cooperate,” he said.

No breakthrough yet

Delhi Police, meanwhile, are yet to make a breakthrough in the case.

More than 40 people, including active vehicles thieves and those previously involved in similar crimes, have been grilled by the police since Thursday afternoon. However, the police remain clueless about the identity of the thief.

Manjeet Singh Randhawa, deputy commissioner of police (central), told Hindustan Times, “Ten teams have been formed to identify the thief and recover the stolen car at the earliest. We are also analysing footage of CCTV cameras installed on the routes taken by the suspect,” said Randhawa.

A team has also been sent to Meerut which is an alleged market for disposal of stolen vehicles, he added.

An investigating officer said that the suspect was alone and was wearing a white T-shirt. The car was parked at an isolated place around 150 metres away from the parking lot. A CCTV camera footage shows the suspect opening the car’s door using a suspected master key and then driving away, said the officer.

“Other cameras footage show that the car went towards Rajghat and from there it took the Ring Road towards Ashram. The video footage is being examined and photograph of the suspect is being developed,” the officer said adding the teams are examining footage of cameras installed on the routes leading towards Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurgaon as well.
