Delhi Metro fares go up from today, Twitter users say it’s a ‘loot’

The Delhi assembly passed on Monday a resolution against the proposed Metro fare hike.

Delhi Metro rides became costlier by a maximum of Rs 10 for those travelling over two kilometres in the city on Tuesday.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) decided it is not “competent” to roll back or defer the proposed fare hike, ending a political confrontation between the Delhi government and the Centre on the issue. While the Centre has said the hike is justified to maintain the metro network’s finances and world-class standards, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government said the new fares are too steep.

The first hike was enforced from May 10 when minimum ticket costs were raised from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the maximum from Rs 30 to Rs 50.

Most Twitter users spoke up against the hike and admonished both governments for the stand-off. Some, however, commended the Delhi Metro services and said they can understand the raise in fares.
