Police said Ravindra Pathak, a retired gardener of Delhi Development Authority, caught two robbers red-handed when they allegedly snatched his wife’s earrings. The accused are Javed (26) and Aarif (32).

Police rewarded Pathak and his wife with Rs 1,000 each for bravery on Saturday.

“By showing courage, Ravindra Pathak helped the police to arrest the robbers who are involved in more than 19 cases of robbery and snatching registered in different police stations,” said deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Ajit Kumar Singla.

Police said the crime incident took place around 6.30am on Friday when Pathak, a resident of Nehru Vihar, went for a morning walk with his wife Bhawani.

When they reached a school on the Karawal Nagar road, the two robbers arrived at the spot on a bike. One of them allegedly snatched Bhawani’s earrings. She was walking ahead of Pathak.

Pathak ran forward and caught Aarif, who was riding pillion on the bike. Javed, who was driving, had to stop the bike when an autorickshaw came in front of him, police said.

Police said that information was received at the Khajuri Khas police station on Friday that two robbers have been caught. A team of police reached the spot and arrested both the accused. A case was registered under sections 392 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused.

“Both the accused are in police custody and are being interrogated. Investigation is in progress,” said Singla.

One of the robbers said he managed to allegedly give the earrings to a third unknown person, police said. Investigation is underway to find out if there was involvement of any other accused.
