Coming soon: Quick boarding access for Delhi’s handbag-only domestic travellers

The CISF plans to introduce biometric and bar code readers that will allow domestic travellers carrying only hand baggage to bypass check-in and security areas.

Domestic travellers carrying only hand baggage will soon get a dedicated corridor at Delhi airport. The CISF plans to replicate Hyderabad airport model where express security check has been introduced. Under this set up, a passenger is frisked at the entry gate and can go straight to the boarding point bypassing check-in and security area.

Once the new system is introduced, passengers will be able to use their mobile as the ticket and code on the e-ticket and e-boarding pass will help them get entry to airport. (HT FILE)

But to avail the facility, a passenger has to have either an e-boarding pass or a printout of web check-in.

“At Hyderabad airport, biometric-cum-bar code reader is installed so the passengers can use their mobile for check-in. We would want to replicate the facility in Delhi and other airports after we get the biometric system here. A lot of time is saved by this facility,” said OP Singh, Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The Bureau for Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is in the process of installing biometric system at Delhi airport. Once the system is introduced, the passenger can use their mobile as the ticket and code on the e-ticket and e-boarding pass will help passengers in getting entry to airport.

Frequent flyers such as government officials, business and corporate travellers usually travel only with hand baggage and will benefit from the express security check facility. The Delhi airport handled about 15 million domestic departing passengers every year and this facility could also help smoothen operations.

An airport official said that the facility will help in reducing the anxiety levels of passengers travelling through a busy airport. “The CISF reinvents and upgrades itself continuously. We are committed to provide security of a very high order and simultaneously are very focused on passenger comfort,” Singh added.

The passengers using this facility will not be able to mix with other passengers before the boarding area.
