Former Okhla MLA Asif Mohammed ‘attacked’ outside his house in Delhi

The police have recovered two spent cartridges and are scanning the CCTV footage form the area for clues. Asif Mohammed has claimed that this was the third attempt on his life in three weeks.

Unidentified gunmen fired at least three shots outside the house of former Delhi MLA Asif Mohammed Khan in south east Delhi’s Jamia Nagar on Monday night. The former Congress MLA alleged this was a second attempt on his life in three weeks. Police said they have registered a case and are probing the identity of the gunmen.

Narrating the sequence of events, Khan told HT that he had come out of his house at around 11pm to take his dog out for a stroll when he heard three shot near his house in Delhi. Khan alleged that there were two bikers who had fired the shots.

“I knew they were gunshots and immediately called the police control room. The police came to my house and said I must have mistaken a bike’s silencer for a gun shot. A crime branch team also came to my house and later found two spent cartridges,” Khan said.

DCP South East, Romil Baniya said police have registered an FIR at the Jamia Nagar police station. Police said they will look at the CCTV footage to prober the identity of the attackers.

Khan, who represented Okhla as an MLA in 2009, said that criminal elements from western UP have made their base in Jamia Nagar. “Many have fled their homes in UP and continue to run their nefarious operations. The Delhi police must be strict and ensure that Jamia does not become a habitat for criminals. I also heard that minutes before I was attacked last night, there was a fight between two groups in Zakir Nagar. At least 14 shots were fired.”
