Anil, the driver, went to meet his former employer Kaveri, 27, armed with a knife and allegedly laid a trap to get his former employer out of her house.

“Kaveri lives on the second floor. Anil rang the bell from the first floor and went straight up. Kaveri’s mother Rakhi opened the door. When she asked him what he was doing there, he told her that he had got a job with their neighbour as a driver. He told Rakhi aunty that their car was parked in the wrong carriage and was obstructing traffic. He requested them to move it,” Harsh, Kaveri’s friend told HT.

Kaveri then stepped out of the house to park the car properly. “As soon as she got inside the car, Anil took out his knife and stabbed her in the neck. He tried to stab her again but the knife fell and he fled. Kaveri raised an alarm and two youths, who were returning from tuitions, helped her. One of them called Rakhi aunty from Kaveri’s phone and the other called police,” he added.

“At present, she is unfit to give a statement but is out of danger. We registered a case of attempt to murder and sent teams to apprehend the accused. Investigation is on,” Chinmoy Biswal, additional DCP, south, said.

The police accessed CCTV footage and will scan it for videographic evidence. “We recorded the statement of Kaveri’s mother and sought details of the driver. We contacted neighbours and will trace his location,” an investigator said.

Kaveri is a fashion designer. Her father died two months ago and she lives in a flat in Shivalik with her mother. Two of her sisters live abroad.
