NEW DELHI: A day after a 55-year-old woman was killed and her house robbed in northwest Delhi’s Model Town, three men, including her former employee, were arrested in the case.

Bunty (32), who planned to kill Kusum Gupta, reportedly did odd jobs for her for 12 years. He recently quit the job. Shunty (21) and Sadiq (20) are Bunty’s relatives, said police.

Police were informed about the murder on Sunday after Kusum’s son, Piyush, spotted her dead on a sofa when he returned home after a business trip to Chennai. There was a plastic rope around Kusum’s neck and the house was ransacked.

Police suspected it was the work of someone known to the Guptas. They questioned all the staff at Piyush’s shop. None of the employees was verified by the police.

“The statement of Sadiq, who worked at Piyush’s shop, was contradictory…He said Bunty, who knew she kept cash and jewellery at home, planned to kill her and flee with the loot. He had roped in Sadik for the job,” said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Vijay Singh.

Sadiq, who came to Delhi a month ago and lived with Bunty, told police that Bunty also roped in Shunty. “Bunty knew that Gupta’s son would be travelling to Chennai for work and that she would be alone at home. Since Kusum knew Bunty, it was easy for him to enter the house,” a police officer said.

“The moment Kusum opened the door they pushed her to the ground and strangled her with the rope. They took the nose pin and earrings she was wearing, leaving a deep cut on her ears and nose. They stole cash and jewellery and fled,” said Singh.

Bunty and Shunty were arrested at Model Town. Jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh, Rs 37,700 cash and equipment to break into a house were seized from them.
