25-year-old dies in hospital, family alleges negligence

The death of a 25-year-old led to his family members to stage protests at Faridabad's Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, where the deceased was undergoing treatment.

The family of the deceased blamed the hospital for negligence, a charge the hospital authorities deny. Arpit Gupta, an engineer with a private company in Gurgaon, was admitted to the hospital after his cab met with an accident on the Faridabad-Gurgaon road about two months ago.

Hospital sources said that Gupta, who lived in Faridabad's sector 21, had sustained a severe head injury and had been on ventilator when he died on Saturday morning.

But when the news about Gupta's death spread, a large number of his family members descended on the hospital and manhandled the hospital staff, blaming the doctors for negligence in treatment.

They also alleged that even after charging them Rs 18 lakh for his treatment till February 18, the doctor's negligence cost their son his life. The altercation broke up only when the police arrived.

"There was no negligence in the treatment of the patient. In fact, we left no stone unturned in providing him the best possible medical treatment. It was unfortunate that the patient died as he had suffered a severe head injury," hospital spokesperson Gaurika Kapoor said. The hospital officials, however, did not confirm or even deny having charged Gupta's family Rs 18 lakh.
