28 bonded child labourers rescued in Delhi

Twenty-eight bonded child labourers were on Monday rescued by authorities from different 'zari' units and a roadside eatery in south Delhi.

The children were rescued in a joint raid launched in Batla House area by a task force on elimination of child labour, sub-divisional magistrate, officials of labour department, Delhi Police and child rights NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA).

The children, belonging in the age group of 6-14 years, are mostly from Howrah in West Bengal and Darbangha and Sitamarhi areas of Bihar, BBA said in a press statement.

Majority of them were working in the zari factories for more than two years.

R S Chaurasia, Chairperson of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, said, "This area was under our radar for a long time but the information about the raid always leaked somehow. This time we kept it clandestine and succeeded in rescuing 27 children. One of the rescued children has been liberated from a roadside Dhaba. The maximum numbers of children we rescued from Delhi belong to zari industry."
