The move is expected to bring in best international practices, such as digitisation of the records in the institutions.

“The knowledge and expertise of the professionals will help bring these organisations achieve parity with international organisations,” an official spokesperson said after the meeting of the Cabinet headed by PM Manmohan Singh.

Singh is also the minister in charge of the culture ministry and has been keen to encourage appointment of professionals to the eight key cultural organisations under the ministry. Three eminent professionals have already been selected to head Archaeological Survey of India, National Archives and National Library.

The spokesperson said the move to appoint professionals — in the rank of professors in the university — to the institutions was aimed at filling gaps in the organisational structure.
