Farmer leader Manveer Singh Tevatia, accused of instigating Bhatta-Parsaul violence, was arrested by the UP police from a south Delhi area. He had been on the run ever since clashes broke out against land acquisition policies killing tow policemen and two farmers on May 7. The state government had announced a reward of R50,000 for his arrest.
Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Jyoti Narayan said, “He was arrested minutes before noon from a house (C-31) in Hauz Khas. He has been brought to Noida.” The city police and the special operation group (SOG) had formed six teams to track Tevatia and his accomplices. "We had put the house, where he was suspected to be holed up for the last 15 days, under surveillance. We saw him come out and get into a car with a few persons. We chased him. At one traffic signal, the driver hit our vehicles. At another, Tevatia got off the car and ran. We nabbed him after a 3-km chase," Narayan said.
“Yesterday, Tevatia gave a telephonic interview to a print journalist. Today he was planning to hold a press conference at a Delhi location and meet his advocate,” the SSP said. The police are trying to get details about the house owner. The police took him to Bhatta-Parsaul and surrounding areas to recover the weapons used by him and his men to fire at the police.
Politics has already started over his arrest. At Aligarh, UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi termed the arrest a kidnapping. She said Tevatia’s life was in danger. “If anything happens to Tevatia, UP police would be responsible,” she said. Tevatia’s mother Harbiri Devi said, “My son is not criminal. He was fighting for farmers. I fear UP police will kill my son.”
