Afghan army chief in India to discuss regional security

Afghan army chief General Bismillah Khan Mohammadi arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a four-day visit to hold discussions on security issues concerning South Asia, including the Taliban threat.

Gen Mohammadi met his Indian counterpart General Deepak Kapoor during the course of the day to discuss issues of mutual concern, when they also talked about army-to-army cooperation between the two nations, army officials said in New Delhi.

In the next couple of days, the Afghan army chief will meet with top Indian defence officials, in an effort to coordinate steps aimed at meeting security challenges facing the region.

"The Afghan General and the Indian army chief discussed various contemporary issues plaguing the region and means to strengthen the military-to-military relations between the two nations," an official said.

India shares a warm and friendly relations with Afghanistan based on historical ties and traditional linkages. The friendship hinges on shared commitment to the ideals of democracy, peace and security.

"The Afghan General will stay in India till July 9. The General's visit will strengthen the relationship further," he said.
General Mohammadi, who holds the official designation of Chief of General Staff of Afghan National Army, has also planned a trip to Taj Mahal in Agra.
