Bank moves court to reclaim Mercedes

A private bank has moved a city court to reclaim a Mercedes Benz car — allegedly used by a man who tried to molest a woman in DLF City last month — from police custody. Officials of HDFC Bank submitted before the court that the bank had financed the high-end car, which was impounded by the DLF police in the wake of the incident.

According to the officials, the original owner of the car was one Hitesh Kapahi.

He owed the bank more than Rs 15 lakh. However, Hitesh, a property dealer and resident of Palam Vihar, had committed suicide on April 24, 2011.

He had brought the car in 2008 from Mumbai.

Hitesh allegedly took huge loans from various financial institutions and debts forced him to take the extreme step.

The police said Narendra Mehlawat, who is the accused in the molestation case, took away the car forcefully from Hitesh. It is possible that Hitesh owed Mehlawat some money.

The bank feels that since the investigation has been completed, the police could give back the car to the bank, which is the rightful owner.

Earlier, accused Mehlawat surrendered before the city court and was sent to police remand. He had been on the run.

A 25-year-old woman was thrown out of the moving car on June 5.
