More than 2,000 students across the country have scored above 95% in the CBSE class 12 exams.
This number is almost double the number of students who had crossed the 95%-mark last year. In Delhi, this number has risen to 818 — almost thrice the number (288) last year.
While this news brought smiles to the faces of many students, parents and teachers, the high cut-offs in Delhi University (DU) — that are sure to follow — will not be a pleasant experience.
Under DU’s new admission policy, aspirants do not have to fill any pre-admission forms. They just have to go to colleges and take admission where they have scored the cut-off percentage or more.
This move is also expected to increase cut-offs as colleges are planning to be cautious and not admit more students than the capacity of their classrooms.
“The cut-off percentage in the first list will be abnormally high this time as all colleges want to be cautious. Deciding the cut-offs will be like shooting an arrow in the dark,” said Bhim Sen Singh, principal of Kirori Mal College. The cut offs in all other colleges are also expected to go up.
“Cut-offs are a necessary evil. We don’t want to dishearten students but since the result has been so good, the cut-offs will increase. But a very high jump is ruled out as the cut-offs are already touching the sky,” said Valson Thampu, principal of St Stephen’s College. Other popular colleges will also have to increase their cut-offs. Last year, the number of students with more than 95% marks had doubled as compared to the previous year.
