City schools scramble to screen Modi’s Teachers’ Day speech, a few go overboard
Most schools in the city are gearing up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Teachers’ Day speech. But some have gone overboard and told students that attendance is mandatory and students may be fined if they miss school on Friday.

According to parents, a prominent school in South Delhi has informed them verbally that students will be fined `1,800 if they are absent on Friday.
“First, there are no school buses to bring the children back and on top of that a hefty fine will been imposed on anyone who misses school. This speech has become a headache,” said a parent who did not want to be named.
Most schools in the city have declared Friday a holiday for students of the primary sections (up to class 5).
At Laxman Public School in Hauz Khas, the authorities have arranged for televisions in 12 rooms. “We have made all the arrangements to ensure students can see the speech comfortably. All arrangements are in place and we are sure everything will go off smoothly,” said Usha Ram, Principal.
Even government schools in the city have made all preparations to ensure the speech is viewed by students on Friday. Even in far-off areas such as Bawana and Narela, preparations for Friday were in full swing on Thursday afternoon.
There are some schools, though, that have not made it clear if they will telecast the speech live or will show the children a recording.
Officials at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, said that they had made all arrangements and the speech would be recorded and shown to the children on “another day”.
Most schools in NCR, meanwhile, have issued advisories to children and their parents, asking them to make sure that the child watch the address at home.
The Delhi Directorate of Education had issued a directive on August 29, saying all schools have to make arrangements to telecast the address and make sure that children can hear it.
As per the directive, it is mandatory for all schools to telecast the speech.
