The state of Delhi’s roads that were highlighted by the Hindustan Times on Monday has finally caught the attention of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). As an emergency measure, the civic agency has decided to spend Rs 13 crore to repair roads.

The money would be spent on filling potholes and relaying some of the worst stretches of roads in the city. “We will repair major roads and do it immediately. We have also ordered an enquiry into the Main Sewa Dham road and action will be taken against those found guilty,” said Vijendra Gupta, chairman of the standing committee of the MCD.

HT had reported how the Sewa Dham road that was designed to last five years had seen seven rounds of repair in the last one year. The corporation had spent Rs 25 lakh to lay the road and Rs 45 lakh on repairing it.

Gupta said junior engineers have been asked to identify potholes in their wards and carry out repair work. The civic body has created a special Escrow account for the current financial year for urban and rural roads and has made a budget provision of Rs 75 crore and Rs 25 crore, respectively. The civic body has stated that work on these projects has been initiated.
