Close shave for kids as bus rams barrier

After the summer vacation, schools in the city opened to a scare on Monday morning.

Several students of a public school had a narrow escape when a bus ferrying them rammed into a barrier. The accident took place on a stretch in front of housing societies (from F 1 to F9) in Sector 50. The road blockade had been put up to prevent vehicles from coming in contact with high-tension electricity wires, dangling overhead in a residential area in the
sector.
The bus narrowly missed the wires and a major tragedy was averted, said eyewitnesses. However, the windowpanes of the bus were damaged in the mishap.
Gurpreet Singh, a dentist, said, “The driver tried, dangerously and unsuccessfully, to drive under the blockade, but smashed the vehicle against it.”
The students were panic-stricken and some began crying after the accident. The driver fled from the spot immediately after the accident.
Singh said, “Instead of fixing or removing the dangling wires from this densely-populated residential area, the authorities shouldered their responsibilities just by putting up a blockade.”
Executive engineer (power transmission) VP Verma said, “We are in the process of setting up a tower to fix the problem.”
“Students’ safety is our priority. The matter will be probed. The damaged barrier will be repaired,” said city magistrate Sanjay Chauhan. However, the school could not be identified.
