Couple commits suicide, 6-month-old baby survives

A 25-year-old labourer and his wife allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan at their rented accommodation in south Delhi’s Badarpur on Friday.

A 25-year-old labourer and his wife allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan at their rented accommodation in south Delhi’s Badarpur on Friday.

According to police, the matter came to light in the evening when the caretaker of the house in which the couple lived with their six-month-old child for past few months found them hanging from the ceiling fan. The child was found alive and crying when the caretaker entered their single-room rented accommodation, said a police officer.

The two have been identified as Sudesh and Savita. Sudesh was a labourer. The couple belonged to Uttar Pradesh and had come to Delhi in search of a job. The couple stayed in the single-room rented accommodation.

“Their bodies have been preserved at a government hospital’s mortuary. We have informed their family members about the incident who are expected to arrive in the city by Saturday morning. The exact reason behind their extreme step could not be ascertained, as the couple did not leave a suicide note,” said the officer.
