Four police personnel were injured and two PCR vehicles were damaged after a group of Mewati criminals attacked them with stones in outer Delhi late on Tuesday night. The policemen were chasing the criminals.
The criminals, who were fleeing in a Tata 407 mini-truck after stealing animals, also opened fire on the policemen in their attempt to evade arrest. The police personnel fired back. But nobody was injured in the shootout.
The police managed to rescue a few stolen animals, including four cows, which were being transported in the mini-truck.
The criminals escaped after abandoning the mini-truck at an isolated place in the Narela area. The police personnel chased the criminals for several kilometres on different routes in outer Delhi.
A senior police officer said their operation to nab the Mewati criminals had started around midnight, after a message was flashed on the wireless sets that a group had been spotted travelling with stolen animals.
"Since there had been instructions from top cops to nab Mewati criminals, all outer district police stations were put on alert and were asked to put up barricades and check posts to block their movement," the senior officer added. When a PCR van tried to chase them, the driver hit the PCR van and the criminals on board started pelting stones. Two policemen were injured in the stone pelting, the officer said.
