Delhi: Cops attacked in Narela over sex racket; 10 hurt

More than 10 policemen were injured and five police control room vans were vandalised in outer Delhi’s Narela on Sunday evening after locals attacked the cops over an alleged sex racket in the area.

More than 10 policemen were injured and five police control room (PCR) vans were vandalised in outer Delhi’s Narela on Sunday evening after locals attacked the cops over an alleged sex racket in the area.

The trouble began when the police conducted a raid around 9:30 pm on Sunday after getting a PCR call about a quarrel in sector-A10.

When the police reached the spot, agitated locals were seen accusing a woman tenant in the sector of operating a sex racket from a house. The police found five people present in the house — two woman relatives of the tenant and three other male friends who had come to visit her, officials said.

When the police wanted to take the suspects for further inquiry, the crowd assumed they were shielding the alleged sex racketeers and started throwing stones.

The locals claimed the sex racket was being operated in the area in connivance with the police.

“Some of them attacked the policemen with sticks. Police control room vans and other vehicles, including the SHO’s jeep, were vandalized by the mob,” said a police officer.

The injured included Ghulam Shabbir, the station house officer (SHO) of Narela, whose hand was fractured. All the injured were taken to nearby hospitals fopr treatment.

Reinforcements were rushed from neighbouring police stations to control the situation and senior officers reached the spot.

A case of damage to public property, obstructing a public servant from discharge of duties and rioting had been registered at the Narela police station. Six persons, including a juvenile, had been apprehended in connection with the case. The police were investigating the locals’ allegations that the alleged sex racket was being run in the area with the help of certain policemen.
