Delhi minor rape: 'Nothing has changed in effect despite the new anti-rape law'

Delhi is once again witnessing anti-rape protests. People are protesting for justice for the five-year-old girl who was brutally raped, and a safer environment for women. This incident has brought to surface the memories of the December gangrape in the national Capital.

Delhi is once again witnessing anti-rape protests.

The five-year-old girl, who was brutally raped, took with her a sea of people demanding justice for her as she was shifted from Swami Dayanand Hospital to AIIMS on Friday evening.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers protested against police inaction and took Swami Dayanand Hospital by storm early Friday evening as the minor was being treated in the said hospital.

The protestors moved outside AIIMS, as the minor girl was moved there for better treatment, demanding a safer environment for women in the rape Capital, as Delhi has commonly come to be known as recently.

There were two rather distinguished groups of protestors outside AIIMS late Friday evening. One comprised of AAP workers who chanted slogans against the government demanding justice be delivered in this case.

The other group of protestors were mostly JNU and Aisac students who held candles and were quietly sitting down in protest. On being questioned, a JNU student who was part of the protests said that "This incident brings back memories of the December gangrape. Nothing has changed in effect despite the new anti-rape law. We need stronger laws and better implementation of laws. Delhi is still as unsafe as it was."

Another student highlighted why she was sitting outside the hospital as late as 9pm very pithily, saying "Action must be taken against the cop who refused to register an FIR and offered money to the victims' family bribing them to supress the case.

The ACP who slapped the protestor may have been suspended, but police must stop manhandling protestors," he added.

However, DCP Prabhakar, Delhi Police, said in a late press conference on Friday that the complaint was registered as soon as the mother came to report her child is missing on April 15.

The five-year-old girl was raped very brutally by her neighbour who has been identified and is on the run according to Delhi Police. Her genitals were badly mutilated. She is suffering from an infection due to foreign objects; the doctors found a 200 ml bottle of oil and a candle forced into her.

The protestors don't intend to let this fizzle out. They appealed to everybody to show up at the police headquarters in ITO, New Delhi at 11am on Saturday morning, to take the protest forward and ensure that justice is delivered.
