DU takes 350 students off rolls for poor attendance

True to its word, Delhi University (DU) has shown the door to more than 350 students who did not make the minimum 40% attendance mark.

With the first semester coming to an end, under the new university rules, all students with less than 40% attendance won't just be stopped from taking exams, they will be removed from the rolls too.

Those short of attendance in the third or fifth semesters — second or third years — won't lose their seats but will have to repeat a year.

"We have detained 44 students. They will be required to seek admissions afresh next year," said SK Garg, principal of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College.

Dyal Singh College has detained as many as 190 students, across the first and third semesters.

With cut-offs for admission touching 100% this year, the students are displeased with the stringent norms.

"This is a huge setback. What do we do now? Next year, if we apply to any college, they will disqualify us because we were 'detained'," said a student of Dyal Singh. "DU could give us conditional admission next year, which it won't. We will be left in the lurch since we may lose out to students with a higher percentage."
