‘Girl wasn’t in touch with any IS operative’: NIA report

A former Indian Army officer in the national capital alerted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) after his daughter indicated that she wanted to join the Islamic State, according to a media report on Monday.

A Delhi-based Hindu girl was put under watch by security agencies a few months back after she told her parents that she wanted to join terror outfit Islamic State (IS).

Officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquired into the matter and found that the girl was disturbed as her relationship with a Muslim boy, which did not get family acceptance, had broken down few years ago. The girl then went to Australia for a few years to study further.

“Her father, who is a retired army officer, contacted the NIA almost four months back, saying some of his daughter’s activities on the internet are worrisome as she was browsing IS literature. The NIA informed intelligence agencies to look into the matter further,” said a counter-terror official, requesting anonymity.

Intelligence agencies went through her social media profiles.

“There was nothing objectionable in her Facebook profile, there were a few old tweets on Islamic State but nothing to warrant any serious concern. She was not found to be in touch with any IS operative,” said another counter-terror official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
