Gujarat Govt told to pay rs 10 lakh to Sohrab’s kin

The Supreme Court ordered the Gujarat government to pay a Rs 10-lakh interim compensation to the family of alleged gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi, who were killed in alleged fake encounters, reports HT Correspondent.

A bench, headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee, asked the state to deposit the money within a week, which will distribute it equally among the couple’s legal heirs.

Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter on November 26, 2006, and a couple of days later, the police allegedly killed Kauser Bi and burnt her body to destroy evidence.

Making it clear that the government would have to pay the family, the bench asked the state on August 3 to suggest the quantum of compensation. The government’s counsel Mukul Rohtagi agreed on a Rs 10-lakh interim compensation.

The court passed the order after the counsel for the victims’ family, Dushyant Dave, readily accepted the offer, saying, “We are in a desperate situation.”
