This is what happened with Palam Vihar resident Isha Mehta.

Recently, when Mehta's car was hit by a truck, she called up the Gurgaon police helpline number, seeking help to prevent the truck driver from fleeing the spot.

However, her call landed at the Delhi Police control room (PCR), where the attendants said they would not be able to be of any assistance.

This is a widely experienced problem for those living on the outskirts of Gurgaon city.

Gurgaon police officials acknowledge it occurs because cellular operators have not fully tuned their systems to enable SOS calls generated from Gurgaon to land at Gurgaon PCRs.

Alok Mittal, joint commissioner of police admits that residents of outer Gurgaon, including Palam Vihar, Sector-23, Sector-23A, Farukhnagar, Bilaspur, Manesar and others, have been facing this problem.

“We discovered this fact in a recent survey conducted on the outskirts of Gurgaon city,” Mittal added.

The JCP said his department has written to all cellular operators, as well as BSNL and apprised them of the problem.

“We also have asked them to update their networks to ensure that Gurgaon residents get to call up the Gurgaon PCR and not those in other areas.”
