HT report leads to a check on all flyovers

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday took suo-motu notice of the recent reports in the Hindustan Times that had highlighted the poor condition of flyovers in the Capital, and sought an explanation from the state government.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Mukundakam Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the state government to file its reply by May 23. “We have perused the press reports on the condition of flyovers in the Capital. We would like to know your views on it,” the bench told government counsel Zubeida Begum.

In a series of reports, HT had drawn attention to the poor condition of the flyovers near Oberoi Hotel, Moolchand Hospital, Janak Setu, Zakhira and Lodhi Road and emphasised the need for immediate attention by the concerned authorities. The railings at the Oberoi flyover were crumbling, with debris falling onto the slip road below, often endangering motorists driving there.

It was the same at the flyovers near Moolchand and Lodhi Road, with debris dropping on the busy Ring Road and Lodhi Road beneath. The road surface of most flyovers was in equally poor condition.

Following the reports, the PWD immediately carried out the much-needed repairs at the Oberoi and Moolchand flyovers.
