India on Tuesday officially announced the state visit of Chinese premier Li Keqiang from May 19 to 21, while saying that the two countries should pursue resolving the boundary issue as a strategic objective.
“Our conviction is that an early settlement of a boundary question will advance the basic interests of the two countries and we, therefore, feel that it should be pursued as strategic objective by both countries,” said Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The boundary issue has come into the limelight following PLA’s incursion into Indian territory in Despang valley in the western sector. As the dust settled after the row, the two countries have come around to the need to address the dispute.
Qin Gang, spokesperson and Director-General of Information Department in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs had also stressed on the need to “redouble our efforts to push forward framework negotiations”
Echoing his Chinese counterpart, the MEA spoksperson said “India is committed to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the border question consultations.”
Noting that the issue has been discussed at special representative-level who have held 15 rounds of talks, Akbaruddin said “they have completed the first step that is they have arrived at political parameters and guiding principles for the resolution of the India-China boundary question. Now, The second phase is related to the framework for the resolution of the boundary question.”
