The Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) has said the occasional rain and thunderstorm has wreaked havoc on the mango produce in Uttar Pradesh (UP), which has adversely affected supply.

"Due to the brief spells of rain and thundershowers the price of mangoes is likely to increase. This is because the varieties that are being sold in the market right now are coming from the south. In the coming month, mangoes from Uttar Pradesh are expected to arrive," said Anil Malhotra, member, APMC.

While varieties of mangoes such as Alphonso, Turkman and Safeda have already hit the markets, retailer say that the mango season may be short lived if weather conditions were to persist.

"As it is, during the summer the mangoes tend to dry up. To add to this, the more popular varieties such as Daseri, Langra, Fazil and Chausa are likely to become more expensive because some of the produce has been affected. So we don't know how long people will be able to enjoy mangoes," said Kishore Mohan, a retailer at Sarojini Nagar.

"The weather has not been very conducive to mango farming this year. So we can say that when Daseri and Langra enter the market, they could be priced at Rs. 75-80 per kg. It could go down eventually but we can't promise the fall in prices yet," said a shop owner at Okhla Sabzi Mandi.
