According to police, the man alleged that the police was harassing him and wanted to die in front of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The PM is currently admitted in AIIMS.

The incident took place at around midnight outside the AIIMS premises in the presence of police.

According to a few onlookers, the police did not immediately come forward to rescue Amit Kumar, a resident of Sultanpuri in Outer Delhi. They said the PCR van took time to reach the spot even after bystanders made calls to the police. Kumar was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre.

He later said: "We are being harassed by the Sultanpuri Police and property grabbers in the area. When I complained against them, they got my brother implicated in a false case of kidnapping. I met senior police officers in the area but my grievances have not been redressed. I consumed poison in front of AIIMS as I want the Prime Minister to know how the police officers are harassing common people."
