Delhi Metro notched a new ridership record on Friday (August 8) with more than 27.6 lakh passengers travelling on the 195-kilometre network public transport system.
A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation statement said this was third time in the past three weeks that the Metro had attained the highest ridership record. On July 21, 26.84 lakh commuters had travelled by the Metro while on August 4, the ridership figure crossed the 27 lakh barrier to reach 27.05 lakh. Breaking all previous records, the ridership figure reached a new high of more than 27.60 lakh on August 8.
More than 10.5 lakh Metro commuters travelled on Line 3 (Dwarka-Noida/Vaishali) while 9.72 lakh passengers travelled on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri-Huda City Centre).
Independence Day activities
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will organise a series of activities during the week-long celebration to commemorate India’s Independence Day.
DMRC officials said the premises of all Delhi Metro — stations, viaducts, depots, residential enclaves and office areas — will be decorated with the Indian tri-colours and will be illuminated with colourful light to invoke the spirit of Independence Day among the commuters.
“The National Flag will be hoisted at all major offices, depots and Metro stations. Patriotic songs will be played at all stations during the week commencing from August 10. A short film on Delhi Metro will be screened on the LED screens installed at stations,” a DMRC spokesperson said.
Quizzes on the theme of Metro as well as India’s independence will be organised for the commuters at select Metro stations across the network. DMRC will also launch an awareness campaign about the importance of using public transport for a cleaner and greener tomorrow through FM Radio. Apart from this, a host of other contests will be organized for the radio listeners and Metro smart cards will be given away to the winners, an official added.

“Delhi Metro has been working tirelessly to provide freedom to the National Capital Region (NCR) from pollution, traffic snarls and road accidents since 2002. As per a study conducted by the Central Road Research Institute in 2011, Delhi Metro has helped reduce about 1.17 lakh vehicles from the streets of the city and has reduced the pollution by 1,79,613 tonnes. By reducing the number of vehicles, it has also helped prevent over 700 accidents annually,” the spokesperson said.
