No remission for sex offenders this R-day

The reduction in prison term of up to 60 days will be granted and the beneficiaries include around 70 women. The government’s move to exclude sex offenders comes five weeks after a physiotherapy intern was gang-raped and brutalised by six persons, who also assaulted her male companion, on December 16 last year.

Apart from sex offenders, those convicted on terror charges have also been excluded from the list for the first time, said Tihar’s law officer Sunil Gupta.

“As a result of the brutal Delhi gang rape incident, the government has for the first time barred sex offenders, including rapists and molesters, from getting remission, along with terrorists,” said Gupta.

Around 20 of the 750-odd convicts, who have been selected by the jail authorities for remission on account of their good conduct, will be released from jail on Saturday itself, said a jail source. The rest are expected to leave for their homes soon on completion of their jail terms.
