Once again, auto driver Kumar comes to a teenager’s rescue

NEW DELHI: Auto-rickshaw driver, Anil Kumar, who reunites stranded children with their families, rescued a 15-year-old girl from Nehru Place in south Delhi on Sunday.

The girl had lost her way back home. She was vulnerable and could have been molested.. Kumar offered the girl help and reunited her with her parents.

In the past few months, Kumar has helped two missing children, aged 4 and 8, reach home.

Around 7am, Kumar was waiting for passengers along with three other auto-rickshaw drivers near Nehru Place pedestrian underpass, when he spotted a girl wandering alone near the CNG station.

The girl looked traumatised and Kumar immediately approached the girl.

“I noticed her for a few moments before offering assistance. When I asked her if she was okay, she started crying. I consoled her, gave her some water, and asked her if she was hungry.

“She told me she was returning from her maternal uncle’s home in Sangam Vihar and had lost her way back home,” Kumar said.

The girl further told him that a group off four-five boys sexually harassed her on the pedestrian underpass. The miscreants fled, when she took Kumar to the underpass.

Kumar wanted to take the girl to her parents, but there was a problem. The girl didn’ t remember their address. She only knew that they lived in Jaitpur area of south Delhi.

But she knew where her grandmother lived. She worked as a domestic help at a bungalow in Kalkaji in Madanpur Khadar.

“I then took her to the Kalkaji police station and narrated the entire incident to head constable Mahender Singh and woman constable Kusum. They recorded her statement and took her to the bungalow in my auto-rickshaw.

“The house owner identified the girl and called her grandmother who in turn asked her parents to reach the police station,” he said.

His humanitarian efforts have not gone unnoticed. Senior Delhi Police officers have now decided to honour him. “The work this auto driver has been doing is commendable. We have decided to reward him,” said Mandeep Randhawa, DCP (southeast).
