More than 400 petrol dealers here remained closed on Monday in protest against the increase in value added tax (VAT) on diesel in the Capital.
Dealers argued that the increase in VAT, from 12.5 per cent to 20 per cent, has made diesel costlier by Rs 3.50 in Delhi as compared with Haryana leading to loss of almost 30-35 per cent of business for Delhi petrol dealers.
The worst affected, the dealers said, were the 150-odd petrol pumps that are located close to the borders of Haryana and UP.
Only 14 outlets in the Capital, which are owned and operated by oil companies, were functioning on Monday, they said.
“We are trying to make the Delhi Government see reason that the difference in rates in Delhi and Haryana was huge and needs to be eliminated,” said a member of the petrol dealers association.
As part of their strategy, dealers said they would keep the petrol pumps closed every Monday till their demands are met. The dealers have also threatened to go on an indefinite strike from June 14.
