She was mourning 3 deaths in family
Hanslata Maheshwari (75), who was killed at her house in GK-II on Sunday night, was very cautious and never let strangers in. The victim was bludgeoned to death by a blunt object by robbers who entered the house forcibly after breaking it open.
In the last six months, three of her siblings had died and she was upset over it. “She had returned from her brother’s house in Muzaffarnagar about ten days ago. Her two brothers and a sister died in quick succession in the last six months,” said Vishal Maheshwari, the victim’s grandson.
Residents blamed the poor security arrangements in the area for the crime. The E-310 house where the crime occurred is located on a busy street. “The M Block market is at a stone’s throw from the house. The road (on which the house is located) is often used by shoppers going to the market. There is no check on the people entering or leaving the area,” said Sushila Syal, a senior citizen lives right opposite the Maheshwaris. Syal said the victim hardly interacted with anyone in the area and stayed indoors most of the time.
The two security guards who were positioned at the colony gate said they did not see anything amiss near the house. The police have picked them up for interrogation.
“There is a pharmacy opposite the house that is open till midnight. May be the roads were deserted on Sunday night due to the IPL match, but there otherwise a lot of movement in the area. The attackers entered through the front door and fled by the rear door.,” said a senior police officer.
“We will review security arrangements in the area and have convened a meeting on June 4. The senior citizens are soft targets and there security is a cause of concern,” said a member of the Greater Kailash Residents Welfare Association.
