Sources said the detained man, Deepak, is a drug addict and had confessed to the crime on Friday. The police officers’ relief, however, was shortlived when they found that on the day of the incident Deepak was not in Delhi. “It is more or less clear that the person we detained is not the killer,” BK Gupta, Delhi Police commissioner, said.

During the investigation, Delhi Police had detained over 100 criminals who were missing since May 5, the day of murder. “Deepak was also missing and was detained. He confessed and even described the sequence of event. When our officers checked, they found that on May 5, he was in Kanpur,” said a senior police officer.

“We are not sure why he confessed but there was no evidence to support his claim. He had claimed he had a fight with Shobhit during which he killed him. However, Deepak was in Kanpur on the day Shobhit was killed,” he added. “Investigation is still going on and all angles are being probed,” Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south) said.
