In a bid to increase its revenue, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to increase the rate of show tax charged from movie theatres.

A show tax is levied by the municipal corporations on movie theatres the rate which varies from corporation to corporation. As per the details, while tax was earlier charged at Rs 10 for every movie screening, it will now be charged at 5% of the total movie tickets sold by the theatres.

The burden of the additional tax will most likely be passed on to the consumers, thereby causing an increase in ticket prices.

“The show tax increase will help us come out of our current financial crunch. It will be a minimal raise. Hence, it is unlikely to pinch the general public,” said Lata Gupta, chairman of the standing committee of east Delhi.

Apart from this, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lead, the corporation has also decided to have yoga teachers for all its 380 municipal schools.

The east corporation, with an eye on empowerment of women, has also decided to open kiosks in the community toilets that will be run by women.

“As many as 100 public toilets will be outsourced to private firms for maintenance. We will allocate spaces for kiosks in these toilets where women can run any commercial shop,” said Gupta.

The corporation has also planned to distribute dental care equipment among 2.8 lakh students studying in its schools. “We have decided to give basic dental products like toothpaste and tooth brush to more than 2.8 lakh students,” confirmed Gupta.
