Sreedharan was admitted to the Apollo Hospital's Coronary Intensive Care unit after he complained of severe chest pain on Wednesday.

The 'Metro Man' is being treated by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by senior cardiologist Dr S K Gupta.

His condition is stable, a statement from the hospital said.

Sreedharan (77), was admitted to the hospital at around 9.00 AM yesterday. He complained of "severe chest pain" while he was at the Delhi Airport, from where he was to fly to Kolkata for official work.

The soft-spoken Sreedharan has become synonymous with the modern rapid transit system that helped ease transportation woes in the national capital.

He is credited with completion of several of the Delhi Metro projects within budget and ahead of schedule.
