Staff crunch: south corp schools look for volunteers

Facing acute shortage of teaching and non teaching staff in its schools, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is planning to launch a voluntary teaching programme in its schools.

Facing acute shortage of teaching and non teaching staff in its schools, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is planning to launch a voluntary teaching programme in its schools.

The programme would focus on extracurricular activities and members of resident welfare associations (RWAs), senior citizen associations and college students can enroll themselves with any of the SDMC schools.

Soon to be launched as a pilot project in several south Delhi localities, it will also be implemented in other schools of the corporation by the end of this year. There are over 500 schools in south corporation.

"We'll start this programme as a pilot project where we'll enroll people from various walks of life including college students. At corporation schools, focus has always been on academics but with the involvement from the community now the emphasis will also be on extracurricular activities," said Satish Upadhyaya, chairman, education committee, south civic corporation.

With this programme, the corporation also hopes to fill the shortage of teaching staff as no appointments have been made in recent years.

Along with teachers, the south corporation is also struggling with shortage of stationery and attendance registers in its schools.

"Students will get immediate benefit from this programme," he added.
